Lanzarote Districts

The island of Lanzarote is divided into seven regions or districts called Municipalities.

These Municipalities are called respectively, Arrecife which is the capital of Lanzarote, Haría, San Bartolomé, Teguise, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza.

Each district has their main towns named after their Municipality.

Each Municipality has its own Town Hall which in turn has its own Mayor and Council. These governing bodies each elect a member who forms part of the Government in Spain.

The seven municipalities of Lanzarote are located within our island map.

Each one has its own special charm and individuality.

Please scroll down below the map to read about the history and uniqueness of each district in more detail.

ARRECIFE

Arrecife became the capital of Lanzarote in the late 18th century, previously an honor bestowed upon Teguise.

The name Arrecife was taken from the meaning “Reef” because of the mass of coastal reefs which lay around the coastline of the city. The city is the mainstay of the Canary Islands fishing industry with many canning factories situated within the industrial areas.

This city is a charming and interesting place to visit or stay if you want a non touristic  venue for your holiday with a taste for real Spanish food and culture.

The city’s main street Castillo y Leon has a vast variety of shops and cafes and is a popular area for locals and holiday makers for shopping but if you want some real variety and bargains venture off the main areas and locate the many
shops tucked into the back streets.

The bars are open all day and well into the night so the habit of taking a siesta is prevalent here with shops closing around 1-2pm and re opening at 5ish.

The newly built Gran Hotel towers above the Arrecife skyline, the only high rise building allowed on island. The sky top restaurant has spectacular views.

The historical culture within the municipality of Arrecife abounds. The historical monument of La Casa de Los Arroyo is a patriarchal residence emblematic of Arrecife and houses the Blas Cabrera Scientific Centre. Other interesting attractions in Arrecife include the Castles of San Jose, home to the international Castillo San JoseMuseum of Modern Art, and San Gabriel, home to the Archaeological Museum.

Another important landmark is the Casa de la Culture Agustin de la Hoz and the 17th century Iglesia de San Gines. The Iglesia de San Gines, which is named
after the patron Saint of the City, was originally a Hermitage, and in 1778 became a parish church.

El Charco de San Gines is a saltwater lagoon enclosed and surrounded by fishermen’s cottages.

From nearby Puerto de los Marmoles a ferry leaves for Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and other cruise liners sail to various exotic destinations.

The beach at El Reducto is surprisingly  inviting. It also flies the Blue Flag on its 470 meters of golden sand. The promenade sports toilets, fresh water showers, kiosks, telephones, and a disabled access. Further along towards Puerto del Carmen is the El Cable beach which has about 300 meters of golden sandy beaches.Arrcife is home to the Cabildo, (the islands Government offices) which are located at El Reducto in a very impressive building which has just been extended.

Close to San Gabriel Castle is the Tourist Information Office housed within a delightful round wooden building.

HARIA

hariaSituated on the North East of the island Haria has much to offer the keen photographer and sightseers.

Haria is the capital of the Municipality of the same name.

Known locally as the valley of 1000 Palms probably due to the fact that a Palm is planted for every girl born and two for every boy within the Municipality.

In the town centre there is a charming square, Leon Y Castillo, surrounded by some equally charming local restaurants.

On a Saturdays the local craft market is held in the square selling cheese, local produce and various crafts.

Caesar Manrique returned to Haria and is buried in the local cemetery.

Haria, Lanzarote

Haria has its very own miniature museum where you can view the world’s smallest newspaper amongst other things.
Open from 10.00 – 18.00

The Water Tank Art Gallery located opposite the main square and situated below ground in a disused Alijbe (Water Tank).

Arrieta

La Garita Beach at Arrieta flies a Blue Flag and is a firm favourite with the locals so it will be busy during the weekends.

It is a clean and safe environment for beginners at surfing.

Arrieta

Showers and a children’s playground help to make this a nice destination for a day out at the beach.

Largely an unspoilt fishing village so the restaurants are unsurpassed for their fresh fish dishes.

Look out for the Blue House a quite extraordinary building which seems very out of place on Lanzarote.

Restaurant Amanacer on the one way circuit is hugely recommended but get there early for a table outside on the terrace!

OrzolaOrzolaOrzola

Drive along the coast past the Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes and you will see many small sandy coves which are popular with locals and tourists who actually know they are there.

Children especially love it these coves and small beaches as they are safe and filled with rock pools and sea life to explore. (Take a net to keep them amused all day).

The best by far is the Caleton Blanca beach which is down a dirt track with a makeshift car park but well worth the drive as there is a small lagoon which is safe and perfect for the children to play in.

Once at Orzola you will not be spoilt for choice in fine fish restaurants which are mostly found along the road down to the harbor. The harbor is a haven for fishing but also host to the Lineas Romero ferry which departs for La Graciosa which also comes under the Haria banner.

La Graciosa

Isla Graciosa

This small island was declared a nature reserve in 1986.

It hosts some fabulous deserted beaches, fantastic walks amongst some spectacular scenery and old volcano called Montana Berjema.

The only transport provided are the bikes which you can hire and it is fairly easy going even for the less fit amongst us.

It is only two square miles and has around 650 inhabitants, a church, a school, a small sports stadium, lots of bars and restaurants and one taxi!

A wonderfully peaceful day out.

SAN BARTOLOME

San BartolomeLying right in the epicenter of Lanzarote, San Bartolome is a cultural treasure trove where you may visit some historic building and museums.

Before tourism took off here the main activity of San Bartolome was agriculture and the ingenious aspects of cultivating a land where the rainfall is very low can be seen across this municipality.

Just to the north of the town are the wine fields of La Geria where the famous Lanzarote grapevines grow in abundance. The black Picon (Volcanic ground rock) is used to retain water and over night dew to protect and irrigate the young vines.

The ground also consists of quite a damp soil called Jable and this encourages the cultivation and farming of crops such as Watermelon & Sweet Potato.

Visiting the farming areas is well worth it as there are many photo opportunities and the actual farmed landscape is exceedingly beautiful.

The town centre boasts a gorgeous, well planted main square with a modern theatre which holds numerous exhibitions and concerts throughout the year

Please call into the municipality Tourist Office in the town centre and collect many leaflets on the features and history of San Bartolome including the Wine Route, (Bodegas) Artesania Route, (Arts & Crafts), and Agricultural History Routes plus details on the various art galleries, museums, restaurants, wine sampling & craft shops.

TEGUISE

Ayuntamiento de Teguise logoTeguiseThe town of Teguise was the Capital of Lanzarote until 1852 when Arrecife took over due to its status as a thriving port. However, when visiting Teguise one is reminded at every turn of the historical majesty and reputation of this old capital town.

Teguise towns main features of the town itself are the historical buildings with the grandest of architecture displayed in the churches and museums.

FamaraFamara

The Famara inlet is flanked by the most imposing 2000 foot high cliffs. It is a fabulous spot for sports activities and in particular, surfing and paragliding and the largest beach of San Juan hosts the international surfing championships.
We recommend the Costa Nor Oeste Kite Surfing School click HERE for further information

The surrounding area is a protected zone with a sprinkling of restaurants, a small supermarket, and no bank but of course several surf shops.

This is a fabulous location as it is so very imposing with fantastic views to La Graciosa and in the late autumn months the sunsets are spectacular.

Warning! The currents around the coastline can be dangerously unpredictable even for the most experienced swimmers!

Costa Teguise LogoCosta Teguise

In 1970 the islands only purpose built resort was constructed and is currently undergoing a bit of a face lift as with some other areas of the island.

The weather here is usually very good all year round but the resort is known for its windy days. This means that the water sport of windsurfing is hugely popular here.

The PWA (Professional Windsurfing Association) championships take place in Costa Teguise.

Obviously surf shops abound and there are plenty of surf schools with boards for hire and instruction for even the very inexperienced.

There are some extremely nice bars and restaurants both along the seafront and scattered around the town and on a Friday evening there is an open air craft market held in the main square.

Costa Teguise plays host to the Island’s original Golf Course and Paddle Courts, with established greens. Great golfing in a great location!

Aquapark

Costa Teguise is also home to the Island’s only Water Park – Lanzarote’s Aquapark.

The annual Carnival also tours Costa Teguise proceeding along the Avenida del Mar, Avenida Jablillo and Avenida Islas Canarias so if you miss it in Puerto del Carmen you can catch the smaller version here.

TÍAS

The towns of Tias and Puerto del Carmen plus the smaller villages of Mácher, La Asomada, Tegoyo, Conil and Masdache make up the Municipality of Tias which is located 12 kilometers from Arrecife, the capital of the island.

Until 1965 the small port of Tiñosa was only a fishing village supplemented by the farming of Tomatoes, Onions and Grapes then tourism took hold with Puerto del Carmen becoming the central destination of Lanzarote.

Tias town itself is a popular destination for ex pats to reside but it is lately becoming quite a busy centre in its own right. There is a theatre within a nice square and a market now held every Saturday where fresh produce may be brought. It also has an excellent Fish n Chip restaurant! 360 Canaries – Tias Lanzarote

Up on the hill at Candalaria stands the majestic church of Nuestra Señora de la Candalaria. Built in 1796 this magnificent church represents the islands architecture well. Great views from the church. (Lots of weddings held there every day during the summer months).

Puerto del Carmen

The town Puerto del Carmen being the main tourist town of the island it obviously has something for everyone.

Strolling along the seafront promenade of any evening one may choose from over 100 restaurants serving everything from Tapas to Indian food.

The nightclubs are many and many of the night life features live performances ranging from rock n roll, jazz, soul, flamenco rumbas to traditional Canarias Music.
The nightlife really doesn’t start until very late as the Spanish like to eat late and boogey long!

‘Centro Atlántico’ on the ‘Avenida de las Playas’, has a good choice of discos and night clubs.

There are 6 kilometers of white sandy Blue Flag beaches which run the length of Puerto del Carmen making water sports so popular. (Parasailing, jet skis, pedallo’s, sailing, diving, skiing, surfing etc).

The local authorities have spent vast amounts of money to improve the island and the town is presently undergoing a complete revamp making it into a minimum four star resort.

This revamp commenced some months ago and is due to be finished by early Spring 2009.

The multi million euro projects include the entire seafront area having a new water drainage system, grass verges, cycle lanes and a one way traffic system.

There are three 4* hotels and a 5* Gran Lux Hotel planned for construction within the grounds of the brand new Lanzarote Golf Course which opened this year.

This new course sits high on the hill behind Puerto del Carmen looking across the town out to sea.
100 new exclusive homes are to be built within the Golf course grounds and the plots are currently for sale “off plan” although over half have already been snapped up.

Lanzarote Golf Course is a wonderful new golfing venue making Lanzarote a brand new golfing destination where the game can be played year round in the ideal and clement weather conditions.

Together with Fuerteventura which is only a 20 minute ferry crossing away from Lanzarote there is now a choice of clubs on which to play for a unique golf holiday.

The newly revamped harbor will open for luxury Yacht berths early next year too, transformed from the old harbor into a modern marina making a total of three on the island.

The famous and very popular Puerto Calero Marina which hosts the Erikson Racing Teams, the amazing newly constructed Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca and now the Puerto de Carmen Old Town Marina. We are awash with up market facilities!

Festivals

The famous Lanzarote Carnival held every year in February is a wonderful experience and attracts tourists by time and again to participate. The parade starts at around 5pm leaving the far end of the town and culminating in an all night party in the old town harbor.

If you do not sing, dance and dress up to generally have a great evening then you will be the odd person out!
June sees fiesta abound with the festival of San Antonio for the 1st to the 13th culminating with the Festival of San Juan .

The end of July see the Fiesta de Carmen with folklore performances, singing & dancing and the specially decorated fishing boats set off to sea to pray for a good catch.

TINAJO

TinajoAyuntamiento de Tinajo logoPreviously one of the most fertile areas of the island until the volcanic eruption of 1730 left the village buried under ash and volcanic lava and again in the 1824 eruption the rebuilt village was left devastated and its people forced to seek refuge elsewhere.

In the second half of the 19th century when Lanzarote began to take off economically that Tinajo came into its own with Donkey’s & Camels helping to re cultivate the land.

In the mid 1930’s with the import ofagricultural plant that the lands around Tinajowere cultivated and the extreme hardships of the municipalities people began to be alleviated.

Having suffered from tow eruption, plagues and famine many of the natural born Tinajo residents has emigrated to Gran Canaria or Tenerife then on to America in search of a better life.
Now with the tourist trade thriving Tinajo has its own unique offering for the avid sightseer.

The famous festival of Our Lady of Los Dolores

Los DoloresThis festival takes place in the nearby village of Mancha Blanca which celebrates the halting of the lava flow by the intervention of Dolores who is now a patron saint.

Now every September this miracle is celebrated in a massive festival which includes the icon of Dolores being paraded through the streets of the town before the end of festival party which predictably carries on all night!

This festival is so popular that many of the island inhabitants walk across the island from their various homes to join in and celebrate. Watching this procession all converging on Mancha Blanca is indeed quite a sight. The center piece of Mancha Blanca is the huge church of La Ermita de los Dolores well worth a stop and look.

YAIZA

Tourist Office Playa Blanca (On the entrance to Calle Limones)
Tel 0034 928 510 018

Yaiza village itself has twice been voted the prettiest in Spain.

With its charming whitewashed buildings and green paintwork it makes for a delightful day out just strolling around.

Filled with history it is in fact lucky to still be standing as it was almost completely destroyed by the volcanic eruption of the 18th century. Yaiza now boasts some beautifully restored houses set in pretty gardens approached by Palm tree lined roads.

The church is called the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios
and was constructed in the 19th century on the ruins of the old chapel site.
In the church yard you will see the only specimen of the
American Bamboo plant on the island.
Gorgeous paintings and carvings inside the church.

Galeria Yaiza displays work from the 30
or so artists & photographers residing on the island.
It also has jewelry, pottery and photographs for sale.

At the far end of the square is the
Benito Armas Cultural Centre
dedicated to the author and politician
who lived in Yaiza for over 60 years.

Over the Christmas period
the open air Nativity Scene
is one of the highlights of the island.
Set in the main square it usually
shows the working village in miniature.

Ugais close by to Yaiza and has a Camel Farm
as well as a Salmon Smokery
where you can purchase really high quality
Smoked Salmon at very reasonable prices.
Recently built on the side of the mountain
are the Stratus Vineyards which supply
the new Stratus Bodega.

La Geria

La Geria is the islands central vineyard area.
The small dug outs surrounded by low stone walls are where the vines are planted to protect them from the wind and trap moisture in the Black Picon from the wind.

These constructions are called Gerias.

The new 18 million Euro Bodega Stratus
which opened in May 2007 is the latest
addition to the many Bodegas (winemakers)
we have on Lanzarote.

Please stop at the Stratus Bodega to taste the
wine and cheese or have some lunch in their
restaurant but more importantly to see the beautifully
constructed building which looks almost like a Cathedral.
Tip. Please buy wines to take home as they
will be packed for travel at no extra charge.

Playa Quemada is an unspoilt authentic fishing village and boasts the excellent Playa Quemada restaurant sitting right on the sea front with its black volcanic beach and which serves fish of course!
Opposite the Playa Quemada turning off the LZ2 is the
Lanzarote A Cabbalo. (See Attractions) where you may hire Horses or Camels for a trek across the beaches.

Femes is probably one of the best photo opportunities
on the island. Park your hire car at Balcon de Femes
in the village of Femes on a clear day and stop to breath!
The view stretches as far as Fuerteventura
where you can clearly see the glow of the sandy beaches.
The restaurant Balcon de Femes offers the best
views but the gardens at the Casa Emilio are very pretty.
Tip. Watch your driving down the other side
of the mountain as the view is rather distracting.

El Golfo is along the coast road, which is
fantastic in itself, past the Green Lake
(see Cultural Attractions) until you come
down the mountain into the fishing village of El Golfo.
Mainly consisting of a line of fish restaurants
obviously serving the fresh catch of the day.
If you love fish do not miss El Golfo.
The scenery here is pretty dramatic in fact this location has been used in filming, the most famous of which was “One Million Years BC” featuring Raquel Welch and THAT bikini!

Las Salinas de Janubio (Salt Pans).
This is the only operating salt extraction works on the island. When it was fully operational some 10.00 tons of salt was extracted per year. The main use for the salt was for the preservation of fish but now that we have refrigeration units the production is down to some 2000 tons per year.

Some of the salt is still sold as table salt with the bulk going towards the famous Corpus Christi Festival (See Teguise) held in June where the streets are decorated in fantastic colored salt designs.
Just along from the Salinas is the Black beach
which is unsuitable for swimming but looks pretty dramatic. TIP: Photograph the Salinas on a sunset as the colors are beautiful.

Playa Blanca is an up and coming brand new 5* Resort
with white beaches and a small harbor
from which the ferries come and go to Fuerteventura.
Only 20 minutes away Fuerteventura
is an excellent day out for shopping or Golf
or to simply enjoy the stunning sand dunes
which stretch for miles along white sandy beaches.

Within Playa Blanca you will find some
of the most modern Hotels on the Island
alongside some especially good shops and restaurants
all of which may be accessed from the
longest promenade in Europe.
This promenade passes along the entire length of
Playa Blanca connecting the hotels and town centre
and makes for a glorious stroll in the evening
or a brisk early morning walk before a hearty breakfast!
Undoubtedly one of the main attractions of Playa Blanca
has to be it’s beautiful beaches with the other
star feature being the wonderful Marina Rubicon
with its walkways, shops, boats,
restaurants, art galleries and so much more!
(See attractions & Shopping).
