One of the seven Canary Islands belonging to Spain and an ideal place to holiday or live. This unique island which is only 37 miles long and 12 miles wide is quite simply stunning. Being just 80 miles off the coast of África the climate offers year round summer like conditions. With average temperatures of 22 degrees and very little rainfall the outdoor life may be enjoyed to the fullest.
The last eruption of the volcano was in 1730-1736 and
again in 1812-1824 but don’t worry as although
the last eruption went on for six years and destroyed considerable
amounts of the island no one was or ever has been actually injured
by an eruption on Lanzarote. However, a lot of the islands
land which was
once lush is now covered in lava fields and
jable. This doesn’t mean that it is barren and colorless
as some parts are still very fertile growing areas and where it is
not suitable for farming then some ingenious methods have
taken over to make it so. (See regional write
ups).

The villages are mostly uniform White buildings with Palm
trees with the gorgeous Buganvilia making
it such a pretty place to live. (See Yaiza)
The government has a no bill boarding policy and no high rise buildings
so the unique landscape is not impaired.

In 1971 UNESCO created the concept of a Biosphere Reserve with the aim of “distinguishing and maintaining those territories where there exist ecosystems that are representative of a biogeographical region and in which there are conditions that allow sustainable economic development and a use of the territory that is compatible with the conservation of its natural resources”.
The island of Lanzarote came to be part of a network of protected
areas of high ecological value in the world. The network currently
has just 300 biospheres worldwide .
Not only is the actual island protected but so is the surrounding
coastline so that fishing is restricted to only a few areas which
make this a divers paradise.
The low flight time from Ireland or the UK and the
reasonable cost make it a popular holiday destination and although
Tourism is the main industry the island remains a safe and unspoilt
destination for either winter or summer sunshine.
There are plenty of holiday activities which we
have listed in detail within this website, (see Attraction & Culture),
the island has vast culinary and visual delights on
offer and if you really love it and would like to live in a place
where the sun nearly always shines and the winters are clement what
better place. Imagine no heating bills, low electricity and
water bills and an outdoor healthy lifestyle.
